How to get an iPhone to automatically add an apostrophe
Here's a great tip from UK reader David Knox:
"So there's a number of words that iPhones can automatically apostrophise for example if you type "isnt" it will drop the apostrophe in to make it "isn't" Which is awesome! But what about words like that could be interpreted by the iPhone either way? Words like: ill/I'll, were/we're, well/we'll etc...? I've discovered a not-quite-perfect system that seems to work for 90% of words like the ones above. Check it out! To get "we're" without function changing just type "weree", same goes for "we'll", just type "welll" and the iPhone does the rest..." 3 Replies

This is similar to the "." Shortcut. If you make sure to turn the shortcut on in Settings->General->Keyboard, the keyboard will add a period to the end of a sentence and engage the shift key every time you double-space. It's a minor convenience, but makes text entry a little smoother, and every little bit counts when you're using a virtual keyboard.

What apps does this trick work in? So far not the calendar or notepad or email or Safari.

double spacing ... isn't that a major hangover from the days of using typewriters? You still see it in some writings because once you have been taught to touch type it is very hard to break the discipline drummed into you by rote learning. Still I guess it's then easy to hit the delete/backspace button Slightly off topic - I still find the iPhone virtual keypad a pain to use when dealing with numbers, especially when everyone encourages you to use numbers, letters and other characters in passwords theses days. |
