When Microsoft renames a product that's been around for a while, like ISA server, you could be forgiven in wondering if it's just a marketing ploy or if there is substance behind it. Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG) is the successor to ISA Server. The name change is purely to reflect the role the product plays. TMG still supports all the functionality in ISA server, but builds on it. The list below covers the feature comparison.

What is in both ISA Server 2006 and TMG 2010
  • Network Firewall
  • Application Firewall
  • Web Access Protection
  • Basic OWA and SharePoint Publishing
  • Exchange Publishing (RPC over HTTP)
  • IPSEC VPN (Remote and Site to Site)
  • Web Caching HTTP Compression

What is in TMG 2010 only
  • Native 64-bit
  • Web Antivirus, Anti-Malware
  • Enhance UI Management and Reporting
  • Email Anti-Malware, Anti-Spam
  • URL Filtering
  • Network Intrusion Prevention
  • ISP Redudancy

The full table appears in the Forefront Threat Management Gateway 2010 Administrator's Companion from MS Press, distributed by O'Reilly http://oreilly.com/c...9780735626386/. The Guide is most comprehensive set of information MS Press has produced on either ISA Server or TMG. With more details on the differences between the products and how to configure these new features, as well as comparing TMG 2010, ISA 2006 and TMG Medium Business Edition (TMG MBE).
