Printing Color Separations
Here’s how to print color separations from Photoshop CS5:
- Open a CMYK image and then choose File➝Print.
- Choose your printer model from the Printer menu. Your “printer” can be anything from a printing press to a PDF file.
- Click Print Settings and choose your paper size as discussed on page 679.
- Choose Output from the pop-up menu at the top right of the Print dialog box
(see Figure1, top)

- Select the printer marks you want to include in your print.
Turn on Corner Crop Marks so you can see where your document will be
trimmed when it’s printed. Turn on Include Vector Data if you want any vector
info in your image to print as hard-edged PostScript vectors. Many high-end
commercial printing presses are PostScript (the technology required for printing
vectors), so this option is usually available for you to turn on. Whether you
print vector info as vectors or as rasterized pixels really depends on what you’re
going for (if you want the artwork to be super crisp, print them as vectors). Peek
at the image preview on the left side of the Print dialog box to see if your image
looks the way you want it to. - From the pop-up menu at the upper right, choose Color Management and
turn on the Document option (Figure 1, bottom).
To choose separations in the next step, you have to choose Document here rather
than Proof. - Choose Separations from the Color Handling pop-up menu.
- Click Print to send your separations to your printer.
Note: If you picked PDF as your printer, Photoshop opens the PDF Options dialog box.
