Fontbook nightmare
I have recently updated from, incredible as it may sound, an old creaky G3 running OS 9.something to a shiny new imac running Snow Leopard. So far so efficient. But one thing I really liked about the old setup was Suitcase as a type management system. Fontbook is rubbish. You only seem to be able to disable fonts you have installed yourself when using the programs that come with the Mac. It doesn't work with InDesign or Photoshop, so that every time you go to select a font you have to scroll through thousands. Apple say it isn't their problem. I'm not impressed. CS is the industry standard for graphics and I can't believe I am the only person to complain.
Am I missing a trick, or is my only option to acquire Suitcase Fusion 3? It's not cheap. And I'm also worried that it may present difficulties with duplicating fonts. 2 Replies
1. I never liked Suitcase, so I used FontAgent Pro (I think you may be able to cross upgrade from Suitcase, and it only costs around US$50). However, I found that it really slowed up my startup, so instead I put the fonts I needed for InDesign into my InDesign fonts folder directly. That was for CS4. I don't use Photoshop much, so I didn't try anything to solve any fonts problems it may have.
2. In CS5 for InDesign there is an alias workaround, but I don't know the details. I'll be reading up about it in the next couple of days, but you could check out the documentation to see how this works. The rumour I heard was that it is the bees knees for fixing font usage for InDesign. 3. Try asking your questions on the Adobe forums for InDesign and Photoshop (and Illustrator if you use it). There will be people there who are very helpful and usually use many more fonts than I do, as they run print shops and design houses. There is even a forum for fonts! forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop is one site. Hope this (partially) helps.

Thanks, Imor. These are all very constructive suggestions. Any more information you find on the alias workaround would be gratefully received.
