My department just purcahsed an ebook for my work. Several of my colleagues are also interested in the subject matter. Can we put the book on a network drive for sharing purposes? I tried looking for this information before I purchased the book. I would note that if we bought the hard copy we could certainly share that, although not simultaneously (unless we read over each other's shoulders ;) ).

You may have answered your own question. The ebook, if treated like a "real" book, should only be read by one person at any one time. If you pop it on a network drive to "share", you'll find it's hard to ensure that no two people are reading it at the same time... unless, as you say, they are reading it "over someone's shoulder". I'm not sure what the exact rules are (which can vary based on your jurisdiction), but I'd imagine that your purchase of the ebook restricts you from sharing it in the way you suggest.

One solution: buy a "dead-tree" copy of the book and share that one. Better yet: get your company to buy it and use it as the start of a shared resource library.

Just my 2 cents.

Paul.

Most publishers will give a good discount for bulk purchases of the same book - so it could be worth seeing if you can get a good deal on the eBook you are all interested in reading.
