How Can I Text Message on my iPad
Asked by JoAnneRN

Just bought a new iPad and am astounded to learn that there it appears that I cannot text or receive text messages.
Can you please tell me if you CAN text with the iPad.
If not, are there any add on aps that can allow me to text? If so, what do you recommend.

I use Google Voice. It takes a bit of time to set up, but it works.
Basically, you get a new phone number that forwards to your phone(s).
Text messages appear in your Google Voice inbox, and are sent to you by email. You can send text messages by email as well.
You can send and receive calls from your computer or phones.
To find our more, go to voice.google.com.

A lot of carriers also allow you to email to text addresses. I'm on Bell in canada and I can receive texts via email@example.com I know most other carriers support this as well.

nathanator11 gives the right answer.
Because Google Voice is cross-platform, you're also not tied to JUST the iPad when you sign up. You can SMS from computers, iPhones, Android phones and maybe even Blackberry's (just not sure on that one).
You can also use Google Voice as the voicemail for your cell phone.

Hello JoAnneRN, if your iPad does not have a SIM card, you would indeed not be able to send and receive conventional SMS text messages.
You can use Skype instead or iMessage (between iOS devices only).
