How do I remove Skype Mobile from my Android?

I have an HTC Droid Incredible with Verizon.
Recently I was cleaning some apps and widgets that I do not use and found that there is no obvious way to remove or uninstall Skype Mobile from my Android phone. There are a handful of tips in forums here and there, but most of the answers I found resulted in work-arounds, or "You have to root your phone" answers.
Is it really likely that Skype, HTC, or Verizon have created an app that cannot be removed? After some further research, this particular app drains my battery, hogs my memory, and is truly bloatware. Not being able to remove it, uninstall it, or block it from running seems like a bad set of circumstances that are hard to believe. Maybe the O'Reilly experts can help me with this conundrum.

"If you have root explorer from the market you can open it then go to systems>apps then mount r/w then just find the apk and long press to delete."
