What would you consider to be the "best" books for a admin./networking beginner?
By a "beginner", I mean someone with little knowledge. I've used GNU/Linux for a while, and, whilst I know how to configure a Web server or whatever, I know very little of networking. I'd like to learn more about networking, so I've decided to purchase a book from O'Reilly (or another store) -- can somebody recommend some book(s) for me? Thanks!
I'd also like to learn more about system administration, so, if there are any books that won't be included for the above request, please recommend some books for beginner sys. admin. information, too. Thank you. 1 Reply
You want to learn networking with Linux? Then you'll probably be spending quite a bit of time with software manuals for things like iptables and LDAP. But the two most memorable books from my time administrating a network were _Perl for System Administrators_ and _Linux Server Hacks_. Books rarely show you in detail how to do *exactly* what you need to do, and expertise in things like network troubleshooting only comes with experience. So my favorite books are ones that do what these two do: show you how to use tools to do the *kinds of things* that are going to come up again and again.
