I have an older iPhone which is kept away from iTunes and the iCloud as I only use it to make calls.
I have recently purchased the new iPad which I am now setting as my new media and personal data center and was wondering how to transfer my iPhone contacts to my new iDevice.
Since all my iPhone contacts are manually created on my phone and are stored locally there, I decided that the easiest way would be to export the iPhone contacts to my computer and then import the contact entries from the computer to my new iPad.

Here are some quick steps for how I achieved all this:
Note: I used an app called Copytrans Contacts to export iPhone contacts to my PC by drag/dropping the entries to my Contacts folder on my computer. The tool is basic and is a free beta – so it is like a preview-version but it ultimately does the job with no extra frills.
1. Run the program and connect the iPhone to your PC.
2. Select all iPhone contacts you want transferred and drag the selection to a folder on your PC
3. When asked what in what format I want the contacts exported I selected iOS since I am about to later import them to my iPad
4. Next, I disconnected my iPhone and plugged in my iPad instead; then dragged my exported contact entries from the PC folder to my app’s Contact’s pane. This added the contacts directly to the iPad
5. I finally kept the contact entries on my PC as a backup copy
Adding Contact Groups
Another app feature worth sharing is the ability to create and edit contact groups on my iDevices. This is otherwise not possible, directly from within the iPhone or iPad. Just right-click where it says Groups and select New Group.

I found this while googling for a proper solution to the problem of transferring contact from one iDevice to the next. My issue is that I am trying to transfer only a set of contacts from my iPhone to my wife's iPad. This is, I would like to transfer only our common contacts, and not all of my iPhone contacts to her device.
Also, some of our common contacts are already loaded on her iPad but with missing data such as business emails and work numbers. Will copytrans Contacts help me merge the complete contact entries I have on my iPhone to my wife's iPad or will it create duplicate entries?

For having your important iPhone/iPad data backed up with ease, without the help of iTunes or other apple provided means using efficient backup program would be an efficient idea. biosa, thank you for your answer. However, I am more interested in whether I would be able to merge contact entries on my iPhone with these on my wife's iPad without creating duplicates or deleting contact information.

Well, by using free utility tool iTunes you can transfer your ipad file to pc or to iphone. but if you are getting any problem then you must try iPad data transfer software. with the help of this software you can easily transfer not only contacts but also ePub file.

There are various options to transfer iPhone files. But third party tool more helpful in this regard.
Don't worry this is not final of your contacts you still have solution of this case. Few days back i got same situation with my iPhone. I used File Transfer iPhone tool to recover lost photos, sms, contacts. It worked fine and I recovered all my iPhone files. You can also go through this way if you want to solve this. Thanks for this great tutorial. I have tried CopyTrans demo version and it was good. But presently I'm using iPhone Contact to PC Transfer Software, works exactly like copytrans and less expensive too.

The default way right now of getting contacts from one to the other is to use iTunes on a Windows or Mac computer. When you sync your iPhone with the computer, it will then sync the contacts as well. Then once you sync the iPad using the same computer and same iTunes, your contacts will sync as well.

When you plug your device into your computer and open iTunes it will bring it up in the initial set-up and ask you what you want to sync with in drop down menus. If you have already done your initial setup I believe you can specify by clicking your device and in the 2nd tab it shows the email accounts, contacts, calendars, etc that are syncing and you can specify there. Forgive me, just going off of memory, I don't have iTunes on my main work computer.
Moreover, i share you a page of transferring iPhone contact to iPad on PC, which includes the transferring of music, photos, videos, SMS, Contact ect. between iPod/iPhone/iPad and computer(PC or Mac).
