Is the Android Market for Verizon's Droid different than the Market for the original G1?

I have two Android phones here on my desk. One is the original G1 I set up with a pay-as-you-go plan through T-Mobile and that I access the Net through open networks. The second is a new Droid from Verizon. I love the Layar browser on my G1 and want to install it on my Droid, but Market searches for "layer" return this error:

There are no matches in Android Market for the search: layar.

The same search of the Market on my G1 turns up Layar Reality Browser 2.2.

Yes. Android Market offerings could differ depending on a number of factors such as: type of device, country of origin, service provider, and operating system version.

Layar is currently not supporting the Verizon Droid due to an API change in the Android implementation on the device, so you won't see it show up when you query. Apparently the change breaks Layar's ability to draw the camera view in portrait mode and overlay their interface. They say they won't have an update until they release version 3 in a couple of weeks. You'll have to wait until then, I guess. Worth the wait though, IMO. You'll get 3D and other AR improvements when it's released.

In addition to the "tailored" offerings, some apps are starting to add device dependent features. For instance, the streaming video service Qik has a beta version of their client with "DVD quality" 720x480px streaming and reworked UI to support the Droids high resolution screen.

Looks like Layar has just released version 3.0 for the Motorola Droid...

There is definitely some odd behavior that does not seem to be documented anywhere. For example, I have the Droid Eris by HTC on Verizon, and TMobile's Cliq, G1, MyTouch and Behold II. I get different results on the G1 than I do on the TMobile phones. I get even different behavior on the Droid. But nowhere is there an explanation for why things are different. If anyone has a link explaining why that would be great. Part of this can be that some phones do not update automatically for 1.6 and you have to install the update by hand. Which sounds fairly complicated (http://developer.htc...-io-device.html).

Even worse, of the apps that just won in the Android Developer Challenge 2 run by Google, the very first app cannot be found anywhere. I've searched high and low, with all my phones, and nobody seems to know how to get SweetDreams. SweetDreams and the other winners are referenced here. Can someone explain what the story is here? And how the Market seems to work in mysterious ways? And more importantly, why there are such differences between the devices. This sounds like such an amateur issue to be having at this point and time in Android's existence. I could understand if it was a month or two old, but this is a year now. Come on Google, let's get this solid so our platform can grow with fewer frustrations by all. I understand Google is trying to support multiple versions of the OS, along with many hardware devices, and multiple versions of all the apps, but this seems like an issue that should have been solved years ago. Don't return an empty list when I search for an app, instead tell me which OS and devices it does or does not work with. Empty results are just plain wrong, and Google of all places should know that.
