Can I use my iPod Touch as a Personal Assistant?
The Current 3rd Generation iPod Touch
( http://store.apple.c...odBrandTerms-US ) Has the capability to connect via WiFi to Skype ( http://www.skype.com/ ) as well as use almost all the apps available to the iPhone. (Excluding anything to do with GPS, and Video or photo, since the iPod Touch has neither GPS, or camera) So, since I do not need a cell phone (I am happy with my current phone) but I do need something I can coordinate my life with (I currently use Google calendar, gmail, Facebook, twitter) Would buying a iPod Touch be smarter than getting a smart phone? I make an average of 30 minutes of phone calls a month right now, and send about 10 Text messages. On the other hand, I send twitter messages (Tweets) several times per day, and currently use Google Calendar to stay organized, and try hard to use my phones calendar to alert me to appointments, but it is severely lacking in functionality. I am not looking for a sneaky way around getting an iPhone, but rather, the best PDA out there, without a phone. (It would be nice to use Skype, just in case I needed it, not as a regular cell phone service) What are my options?

With the exception of accessing the GPS, compass, camera, 3G, and Edge, all apps that run on an iPhone should run on an iPod touch. It's nice to be able to check your email, snap a photo, or read a web page on the go, but if you can do without, then an iPod touch is an excellent choice. As of November 4, 2009, there are over 100,000 apps in the App Store. If you're into David Allen's Getting Things Done, one of my personal favorites is Things. They also have a desktop version for OS X that syncs with the iPone/iPod version.

Wow. I spent Friday night reading my O'Reilly Books, and alternatively learning how to use an Apple Ipod Touch. Saturday was Application day. With 100,000 apps available, thank goodness I had Best iPhone Apps. When I found a few mentioned apps that no longer existed, I found the Books Official Website here: http://iphoneapps.oreilly.com/ and it gave me some updated info.
Sunday was a pseudo work day for me, so I put the Touch to the Test. I caught up on Twitter, I checked my RSS Feeds using my Google Reader App (I still have questions about that, though), checked over my Google Calendar, and replied to a couple e-mail messages, all on my iPod Touch. I usually do all this on my Notebook, and it took me a bit longer, but in the end, I was ready to go. As I worked my way through doing laundry, and thinking about getting food for the week, I definately got caught up in the iWeb, and found myself searching for apps for Renting DVDs, getting groceries, banking, and finding out what is on TV. So, as a personal Digital Assistant, it worked wonders! But it is also quite a little distraction, which tends to make things take twice as long, without any discipline. For me, who needs neither a new Cell Phone, or a $3000 per year Cell Phone Bill, the iPod Touch is fantastically perfect! I can now see the frenzy for creating and monetizing APPs, the 'Apple Love' from iPod and iPhone owners (This is my first APPLE iPod, although I have owned MP3 players for years). I am fascinated, and feel empowered. I feel tethered, yet free to stretch out further. For me this week: Skype!
I recently made the switch from a paper FranklinCovey planner to using my iPod Touch. It has been great. I use Google and Yahoo Calendars which sync with the built in Calendar app. I'm using ToodleDo for a to do list. The ToodleDo app syncs with the web version which provides an easy backup. Using other apps, I am able to save web pages to view off line, upload and view PDFs, create mind maps, read eBooks...With all of the possible uses, I don't understand why I don't see more people using an iPod Touch as a PDA/pocket computer.

>>What are you opinions?
I have two opinions. First, you should get an iPod touch. You will use it every day, multiple times a day. It will be your constant companion wherever you go. Second, your English needs improvement. You can say, "the iPod Touch has neither GPS nor camera" or you can say "the iPod Touch has not have either GPS or camera" but you cannot say "the iPod Touch has neither GPS, or camera" without being extremely ugly. And get rid of the comma. |
