Looking for fun projects to do with my young nephews. Robots? Electronics? Building?

Around the holidays we like to plan some activities with our young nephews ages four and five. They love tools, moving parts, and of course robots. Are there some projects you'd suggest, or have tried with your kids? We have a basic set of tools and have access to a surplus electronics store in town.

Howtoons is an amazing resource for projects. The marshmallow shooter is particularly fun! - Marc

Color me jealous! You still have electronic surplus locally? Ours closed in the last 5-10 years. I'd love to come shop!
Anyway, Legos have always been great, and NXT for more advance kids/users. look at projectsofpassage.blogspot.com for a robot project I have underway with my son. If you're talking surplus, you must be talking some real hacking vs. kit building, right?
Btw, instructibles.com is a good place to look for ideas/plans. Also Make magazine.

Ok, I'm typing this a second time. I see this is beta - it must be, because I clicked Preview Post and my post was wiped out. Couldn't use Back to find it, either.

Anyway . . . here are some answers, but they are not necessarily "projects":

Check out the very fun and addictive program call Phun: http://www.phunland.com/wiki/Home

Would they like to learn programming? Some options:

Scratch: http://www.makeuseof...g-from-scratch/

SmallBasic: http://www.makeuseof...fts-smallbasic/

Check out Make magazine, of course. ;~)

Water Rockets: http://www.water-rockets.com/

Hope all this helps. Even just typing into this editbox, the web site is acting up. I'll be lucky if it posts this time.

I just found two projects that look interesting:

Little 8 from Let's Make Robots

and How to Build a Simple Robot – Beetle Robot from GoRobotics.net
