SMS, Skype, Twitter, and IM are all very useful, but for large groups of people IRC seems to work best. What's the best IRC client for the iPhone?

For IRC on the iPhone I use Rooms by Björn Teichmann. It's based on Chat Core (Colloquy). It does most of what you'd expect a good iPhone IRC client to do. SSL, ident/nickserv, RAW commands, etc. Opens if you click an irc:// link in browser or mail. It's an all-around decent client, IMO. Well worth the price tag.

I also use Rooms. It works well. IRC isn't exactly the friendliest protocol for such a small screen device but Rooms makes it usable. It will also leave the connection open when your iPhone sleeps, if you enable that feature (but watch your battery life!)

For less advanced use Chatmosphere IRC ChatFinder is a good option. It's interface works well with the iPhone screen size IMHO

I know this question is old, but I thought I'd update it. There is now another irc client for the iphone/ipad called Dump Chat.
