Acrylic Machine Shops in the Bay Area?
Hi everyone,
Over the past 6 months, I've had the great learning experience of working with a local acrylic shop in Sacramento, in order to manufacture our acrylic gel electrophoresis boxes (blueprints available at http://www.pearlbiotech.com/hardware). I'm now looking for other acrylic machine shops shops in the Bay area that could build this: http://www.pearlbiotech.com/, given a CAD and demo of the device. I've found one other shop called Acrylic Art in Emryville, but their price estimate was suprisingly 10x what we're paying currently! We also got a quote from Tri City Plastics which is in the right ballpark, but still higher than we're comfortable with. Do you know any other local shops? (specifically, looking for 1/32" tolerances, so more than just the 1/16" of saw cuts). On the flip side, building these by hand is just one option. Does anyone have expertise in creating molds and would be interested in a joint project? Open to options, we're looking to keep the price down so that we can make these accessible to hobbyists in the $200 price range, rather than the $2,000 these are sold for currently by other companies. Thank you! Tito Founder, Pearl Biotech 2 Replies
Hello,
This probably does not directly answer your question, but: 1) Tap Plastics http://www.tapplastics.com 312 Castro Street Mountain View, CA 94041-1206 (650) 962-8430 in my experience can and does machine acrylic, as well as supplying the material. 2) TechShop http://www.techshop.ws 120 Independence Drive Menlo Park, CA 94026 (800) 640-1975 is a membership machine shop where you can machine your own stuff once you are checked out on equipment; they also have a number of nice laser cutters that might be well-suited for your needs. I hope this helps. Best, Martin
